Cerebral Palsy Causes

Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects the nervous system, motor skill function, and muscle coordination, among other things.  Ultimately, cerebral palsy is caused by damage done to a particular part of the brain during developmental stages.

 

Because cerebral palsy causes can involve any damage to the brain during development, a number of different issues can be pointed to as putting an individual at high risk for cerebral palsy.  Individuals who are at high risk should be monitored constantly for signs and symptoms of the condition.  As the condition may be difficult to detect in some children, it’s always a good idea to consult a proper medical doctor if you think your child may have cerebral palsy.

 

Seizure disorders, when severe enough, can cause seizures which rob the brain of the vital oxygen it needs to adequately function.  Because a lack of oxygen can cause damage to the brain, including to the cerebellum, individuals with seizure disorders – particularly young children – can be at a higher risk for developing cerebral palsy as a result of one of these seizures.

 

All known cerebral palsy causes involve damage to the brain during developmental stages.  Because of this, there are a number of birth defects which can contribute to a child being born with cerebral palsy.  Additionally, complications during child birth can contribute to damage to the developing baby’s nervous system and brain, undergoing such complications can place the child at a higher risk for cerebral palsy.

 

There are times when exact cerebral palsy causes in a child may never be completely determined.  Some children born with cerebral palsy may have experienced brain damage as a result of something which occurred very early on in the pregnancy.  Other children may not develop or exhibit signs of the condition until later on in childhood, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact cause of the condition.

 

Term cerebral palsy doesn’t indicate cause and prognosis of a child with the cerebral palsy. Also, there are a lot of possible causes of the cerebral palsy.
